Au croisement du film historique et de l’histoire du cinéma, le Ciné-histoire propose un cycle thématique de 6 films autour d’un ou d’une cinéaste, d’une époque ou d’une question commune. La projection de l’œuvre est précédée d’une brève présentation du film, lequel sera suivi d’une discussion animée par un historien ou une historienne.

Lorsqu’il dépasse le simple « film en costumes », le cinéma historique constitue un exercice particulièrement exigeant d’écriture du passé. Comme pour l’historien et l’historienne les plus rigoureux, scénaristes et cinéastes interrogent l’histoire en reconstituant la trajectoire de personnages complexes, généralement aux prises avec des dilemmes moraux. Les plus grands films historiques réussissent à reconstituer l’étrangeté du temps passé tout en le liant avec des enjeux et des questions atemporels.

Si les frères Lumière, Auguste et Louis, sont souvent crédités pour avoir inventé le cinéma en 1895, on oublie généralement que l’un des premiers films de fiction de l’histoire, La fée aux choux, fut réalisé en 1896… par une femme, Alice Guy, pionnière à plus d’un titre. Pour son 8e cycle, le Ciné-histoire a choisi de souligner le travail exceptionnel des femmes derrière la caméra par une série qui conjugue, au féminin pluriel, le cinéma historique et l’histoire du cinéma.


Entre cinéma féministe et cinéma féminin, cette programmation révèle l’invisible, fait entendre ce qu’on a longtemps fait taire, et met en scène des réalités sociales que le septième art n’avait pas, ou peu, représenté avant elles. Pour souligner le 130e anniversaire du cinéma nous proposons 6 femmes, 6 pays de production, 6 expériences de l’histoire qu’il est urgent de redécouvrir.

Ciné-histoire is where film history and historical film meet. The Cinéma du Musée is proud to present its new thematic series. Each screening will be preceded by a brief introductory presentation, and followed by a discussion led by an historian.

Recreating the past, making history, calls for skill, knowledge, and an attention to detail far beyond what is required for mere “costume dramas.” Screenwriters and film directors must be as meticulous as historians, analyzing every facet of history as they reconstruct the lives of complex characters often caught up in moral dilemmas. Only the greatest historical films are able to recreate the strangeness of the past while addressing themes that are both timeless and universal.

For its 8th cycle, Ciné-histoire has chosen to highlight the exceptional work of women behind the camera with a series that combines historical cinema and the history of cinema.

Between feminist cinema and feminine cinema, this programming reveals the invisible, gives voice to whom were long been silenced, and stages social realities that the seventh art had not, or barely, represented before them. To mark the 130th anniversary of cinema, we present 6 women, 6 production countries, 6 experiences of history that are urgent to rediscover.
