En 1821 au Brésil, un marchant d'esclaves veuf épouse la nièce de son épouse défunte. Mais ses affaires l'obligent à être très souvent en voyage, laissant sa nouvelle femme seule au milieu des esclaves.

Upon returning from an expedition, Antonio discovers that his wife has died. Confined to a desolate property in the company of his aging mother-in-law and numerous slaves, he marries his wife’s niece, Beatriz. Separated from her family, Beatriz finds solace in the oppressed inhabitants around her.

Carla Francisco is an art historian specializing in the representation of Black individuals in the visual arts, particularly in Latin America and Brazil during the slave periods. She has recently taken on the role of professor of Global South Art History at UQAM.
